Why this icon Rinchenpong is known for its view of the Kanchenjunga range at sunrise. Source: soreng.nic.in
Wake early. Watch Kanchenjunga turn gold above the monastery.
The story
Sunrise on a winter morning at Rinchenpong: the Kanchenjunga range turns gold across the skyline above the forested monastery ridge and its red-and-yellow gompa, and a traveller at the rail of a homestay terrace holds a steaming cup of tea beside a basket of the garden's oranges.
Why this picture
Rinchenpong, a ridge-top village at about 1,700 m in western Sikkim, faces the whole Kanchenjunga range, a long wall of snow peaks that turns red, then gold, at first light; the cold months (October to March) give the clearest skies. The little Rinchenpong Monastery (1730) stands on the ridge among tall prayer flags, Sikkim's monasteries wear red-and-yellow facades, and the homestays' terraced gardens grow oranges, ripe in winter, and large cardamom.
The motion
The sun's rays stir; the prayer flags by the gompa ripple; steam rises from the cup; a few minivets cross the sky; the orange tree sways. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Rinchenpong takes Blush #F6ADCD, one of the three Valleys colours — with its icon in Steel Grey on it.
