Raft the Ganga. Stretch at sunrise. Breathe.
The story
A clear spring morning in Rishikesh: a raft comes down the green Ganga below Lakshman Jhula, a traveller in a helmet paddling at its bow, while red semal flowers on the forested Shivalik banks and guesthouses climb the slopes by the bridge.
Why this picture
Lakshman Jhula, the iron suspension footbridge of 1929, hangs high over the Ganga where it leaves the Himalayan foothills; the river runs clear and green outside the monsoon, and rafting runs from September to June in paddle rafts about 4 m long, everyone in a helmet and life jacket. Ashrams and guesthouses are stacked up the steep banks by the bridge, sal forest covers the Shivalik hills, and the semal flowers red on bare branches from February to April.
The sky wears a faint Khovar, from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
The motion
The paddles dig and draw; the water lines run, row against row; the trees sway; the sun's rays turn. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Rishikesh takes Lagoon #34C2D7, one of the three Waters colours — with its icon in Steel Grey on it.
