Why this icon Cheog sits in the apple orchards above Shimla; the crate is the season's measure. Source: zostel.com
Wake in the orchards. Crunch an apple straight from the crate.
The story
First light at the apple harvest in Cheog: a crate of just-picked red apples stands close by in the long grass below an orchard row, a windfall beside it, while a traveller and a picker of the village reach into the row's trees for the next ones; the sun comes up between the wooded ridges, mist lies in the fold below them and two blue magpies fly over.
Why this picture
Cheog sits in the apple belt on the high ridges between Kufri and Theog, its slopes cut into terraced orchards of Delicious apples ringed by deodar forest. Harvest runs from late August into October, when the trees hang red and the crates fill at the ends of the rows for the run down to the Dhalli apple market.

The motion
Two magpies fly across the whole sky; the sun's fan of rays breathes as it rises; the apple trees and the deodar sway; the traveller and the picker beside them reach up into the trees and back, in turn; the long grass at the crate stirs. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Cheog takes Mustard Leaf #E2E418, one of the three Fields colours — with its icon in Steel Grey on it.
