The story

A harvest morning at Kotgarh: an apple tree heavy with red Delicious apples fills the foreground, and beyond it, on a lower terrace, a traveller up an orchard ladder reaches into the next tree, a basket of apples at its foot, the terraced orchards stepping down to the Sutlej under the wooded ridges, two blue magpies flying over and snow peaks standing to the north.

Why this picture

Himachal's apple story began at Kotgarh: in 1916 Samuel Evans Stokes planted the American Delicious here, on terraced slopes some 6,500 ft up above the Sutlej, and the orchards spread across the hills. The terraces are held by dry-stone walls; in September the trees hang red, morning haze fills the valley below, and griffons ride the air over it.

The sky wears Khovar, from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.

The motion

Two magpies fly across the whole sky; the river's water lines run; the orchard trees sway; a griffon circles over the valley; the sun's rays turn; the traveller's hand reaches up into the tree and back. A 16-second loop.

Another moment in Kotgarh

A second scene: another true moment at Kotgarh, drawn in the graphic vocabulary with the animals and city symbols that belong there. Wide for screens, tall for a phone held upright.

The second Kotgarh scene: An early-June afternoon at the Tanni Jubbar Mela

The story

An early-June afternoon at the Tanni Jubbar Mela: by the small lake in its ring of deodars two Kotgarh Zobus dance the nati with the village under the fair's bunting, while at the stall in front a basket brims with the season's first sweet cherries and a langur watches from the forest's edge.

Why this moment

Tanni Jubbar Lake lies a short drive uphill from Zostel Kotgarh, ringed by trees that mirror in it and backed by a reserve forest; in early June (May-June) the Tanni Jubbar Mela fills its banks with music, food and dancing. Early summer is Kotgarh's cherry season: the apple country is as known for its glossy red sweet cherries. Grey langurs live in the oak-and-deodar forests of these hills.

The motion

A bank of cloud crosses the sky; the sun's rays turn; the bunting flutters; the lake's rows run; the deodars sway; the Zobus and the village dance on the beat. A 16-second loop.
