Cross cold dunes on two humps. Hunder, high Himalaya.
The story
Late afternoon on the Hunder dunes: a traveller rides a two-humped Bactrian camel over a rippled dune crest while two more wait behind; sea buckthorn hangs with orange berries at the sand's edge, the poplars along the Shyok turn gold and the moon rises over the bare peaks.
Why this picture
Nubra's Hunder dunes lie on the Shyok's flood plain between Hunder and Diskit, a cold desert above 3,000 m ringed by bare, snow-capped mountains. Its Bactrian camels, descendants of the old Silk Route's pack animals, carry travellers in short strings, best in the late afternoon; in September the poplars along the water turn gold, and thickets of sea buckthorn, the 'Leh berry', hang with orange fruit between the sand and the river.
The motion
The moon's rings turn; the river's lines run; the poplars sway; a pair of magpies crosses the sky. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Nubra takes Blush #F6ADCD, one of the three Valleys colours — with its icon in Steel Grey on it.
