The story

Sunset at the Shanti Stupa: the white stupa with its gold spire stands on its hilltop against the setting sun, prayer flags fluttering from the spire and visitors tiny on its terrace, while a traveller on the long stairway turns to photograph Leh's flat roofs and the snowy Stok range below.

Why this picture

The Shanti Stupa (1991), a white-domed peace stupa with a gilded spire, crowns the bare hill above Changspa at 3,609 m; a stairway of about 555 steps climbs to it, and sunset is its classic hour. Below it Leh's whitewashed, flat-roofed houses stand among poplars in the green Indus valley, and the snow-capped Stok range rises across the river.

The motion

The sun's rays turn; red-billed choughs wheel in a wide circle over the valley; the prayer flags flutter; the poplars sway. A 16-second loop.

Another moment in Leh

A second scene: another true moment at Leh, drawn in the graphic vocabulary with the animals and city symbols that belong there. Wide for screens, tall for a phone held upright.

The second Leh scene: A September morning at the Ladakh Festival in Leh

The story

A September morning at the Ladakh Festival in Leh: under the nine-storey palace on its ridge, two Ladakhis in festival dress dance down the old town's lane among whitewashed houses and golden poplars, drummers beating time beside them, a touring motorbike parked by the wall and a street dog watching.

Why this moment

The Ladakh Festival is held in Leh each September: troupes in traditional Ladakhi dress dance in procession through the town below Leh Palace (c. 1600), nine storeys of mud brick on the ridge over the old town of flat-roofed whitewashed houses. The poplars turn gold in September, Leh is the end of the great motorbike roads over the passes, and its street dogs are part of every lane.

The sky wears Gond scales, from Madhya Pradesh.

The motion

Clouds cross the deep blue sky above the palace; the sun's rays turn; the two dancers hop on the beat and the drummers beat time; the poplars sway; red-billed choughs wheel over the town. A 16-second loop.

Leh in symbols

Beside its icon, the things that are Leh, drawn in the Brand Manual's city language: a monument in the city grey with its openings cut, the things of the place in flat landscape colours. Each comes in colour and in the city grey. Every place's symbols

  • Leh PalaceMonument

Leh Palace (Sengge Namgyal, c. 1600): nine storeys of mud brick on the ridge over the old town — the royal family above, stables and stores below — the skyline every view of Leh is built on.

  • A touring motorbikeOf the place

The touring motorbike: Leh is the end of the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways, and riding over the high passes to it is the Ladakh journey; a bike loaded with saddlebags and a duffel, no maker's shapes.

  • Gurgur cha and its churnOf the place

Gurgur cha, Ladakh's butter tea, named for the sound of its churn: tea, butter and salt worked in the dongmo, a tall wooden churn bound with brass bands, then poured into bowls.
