Charminar by night. Biryani, chai and Irani cafés.
The story
Charminar by night: under the moon the Charminar glows cream-gold over the Old City, its clock lit; a traveller at a marble-topped table outside an Irani café dunks an Osmania biscuit into chai while a regular sips his inside, people stroll in the plaza, and further along the lane a bangle stall glitters as a woman chooses bangles.
Why this picture
The Charminar (1591) is a square gateway monument with a great arch on each face, a clock above each arch (added in 1889) and four 56 m minarets, built when the Qutb Shahi capital moved from Golconda; it is lit at night over the Old City's bazaars, and its plaza is being made pedestrian. Irani cafés serve Irani chai with Osmania biscuits at marble-topped tables, and Laad Bazaar, the lane of lac-bangle shops beside the Charminar, glitters after dark.
The motion
The moon's rings turn and a night cloud drifts across it; the stars and the city's windows come and go; the bangles glitter; steam curls off the chai. A 16-second loop.
