The story

Golden hour on Lake Pichola: the City Palace's long wall of balconies and cupolas turns gold as the sun goes down behind the Aravalli, people sit on a ghat's steps at its foot, and a boat glides past, a traveller in its bow with a camera raised, as egrets fly home.

Why this picture

The City Palace stands 244 m long and 30 m high on the east shore of Lake Pichola, a white wall of jharokha balconies, towers and domed cupolas that the evening light turns gold; bathing ghats step down into the lake along its shore. Boats leave from its jetty at Bansi Ghat for sunset rides past it, while egrets fly home over the lake.

The sky wears Leheriya, from Rajasthan.

The motion

The water lines run, row against row; the boat rocks on the water; egrets fly across the sky and others skim low over the lake the other way; the sun's rays breathe. A 16-second loop.

Another moment in Udaipur

A second scene: another true moment at Udaipur, drawn in the graphic vocabulary with the animals and city symbols that belong there. Wide for screens, tall for a phone held upright.

The second Udaipur scene: A winter morning on Lake Pichola

The story

A winter morning on Lake Pichola: a traveller sits on the steps of a lakeside ghat looking out at Jag Mandir, the island palace, pale in the morning sun against the Aravalli; a kingfisher watches the water from a post, a boatman waits in his boat by the steps and egrets fly over.

Why this moment

Jag Mandir (17th century) is the palace on Lake Pichola's southern island, a domed pavilion over a long garden front lined with stone elephants, with the Aravalli hills closing in round the lake. Ghats step down to the water along the old city's shore, small boats cross the lake, and egrets and white-throated kingfishers fish it; winter mornings are clear.

The motion

Egrets fly across the whole sky; a cloud bank drifts over the far hill; the lake's rows run against each other; a boatman's moored boat rocks on the water; the sun's rays turn; the bougainvillea sways. A 16-second loop.

Udaipur in symbols

Beside its icon, the things that are Udaipur, drawn in the Brand Manual's city language: a monument in the city grey with its openings cut, the things of the place in flat landscape colours. Each comes in colour and in the city grey. Every place's symbols

  • Jag MandirMonument

Jag Mandir, the island palace on Lake Pichola (17th century), in yellow sandstone and marble: the domed Gul Mahal over a white colonnade of cusped arches, eight stone elephants on its landing steps.

  • Kathputli, a pair of string puppetsOf the place

Kathputli, Rajasthan's string puppets, danced nightly in Udaipur's old havelis: carved wooden heads with big eyes, bodies of cloth, the women in flared skirts without legs, worked by two strings from head and waist.

  • The glass peacock of Mor ChowkOf the place

Mor Chowk, the Peacock Courtyard of the City Palace: three peacocks modelled in high relief and faced with coloured glass, each in its own niche, its tail fanned behind it; they are said to hold 5,000 pieces of glass in green, gold and blue, and were set there in Maharana Sajjan Singh's time. Bagore ki Haveli keeps two glass peacocks more.

  • A Bhavai dancer, a tower of pitchers on her headOf the place

Bhavai, a Rajasthani dance of balance and one of Udaipur's own: a veiled dancer turns with seven or nine brass pitchers stacked on her head, her feet on the rim of a brass plate, a glass or a sword's edge. It is danced every evening in the folk show at Bagore ki Haveli. (The Gujarati folk theatre of the same name is another thing.)
