Saddle up on a yak. Ride the hills above Shimla.
The story
A bright winter morning at Kufri after fresh snow: a traveller rides a saddled yak across the white slope, waving, its hoofprints trailing behind, while a skier glides down the far slope under the snow peaks, deodars line the hill and a cloud sails across the clear sky.
Why this picture
Kufri, 2,720 m up and 16 km beyond Shimla, is the town's snow playground: from December to February its rounded hilltops and potato-field slopes lie under snow, ringed by cedar forest below Mahasu Peak; yaks in bright saddle cloths carry visitors up the slopes, and skiers and toboggans come out on the snow.
The sky wears Khovar, from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
The motion
A cloud sails across the whole sky; two birds fly across it; the sun's rays turn; the traveller waves; the deodars sway; points of light glint on the snow. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Kufri takes Valley Blue #4F87C7, one of the three Valleys colours — with its icon in white on it.
