Why this icon Gun Hill is reached by cable car from the Mall Road. Source: en.wikipedia.org
Leave the Mall below. Ride the cable car up Gun Hill.
The story
Dusk in early winter: the Gun Hill cable car climbs its cable to the station on the hill, riders at its windows, the winterline lights up gold over the Doon Valley as the sun sets, and a traveller on the Mall points it out while a local at the railing watches the sun go down.
Why this picture
The Gun Hill ropeway, about 400 m long, lifts visitors from the Mall Road to Gun Hill (2,024 m), Mussoorie's second-highest point. From mid-October to mid-January the winterline, a sharp golden false horizon, forms over the Doon Valley at sunset. Deodar and oak cover the ridges, Landour's colonial cottages wear red pitched roofs, and a railing runs along the Mall's valley side.
The motion
The cabin rocks gently on its hanger; cottage windows light up one by one; the setting sun's rays breathe; the deodars sway; a pair of griffons wheels wide and high over the valley. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Mussoorie takes Orchid #AA5EA5, one of the three Valleys colours — with its icon in white on it.
