Boulders, ruins, the stone chariot. Climb up for sunset.
The story
Sunset at Hampi: the carved stone chariot of the Vittala temple stands in its paved courtyard against a big setting sun, coconut palms rise between the granite boulder hills, and a traveller on top of a boulder raises both arms to the sun.
Why this picture
Hampi, the ruined Vijayanagara capital (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), lies among hills of piled granite boulders by the Tungabhadra, with coconut palms growing between them. In the Vittala temple's granite-paved courtyard stands the stone chariot, a shrine built as a temple car: bands of carved friezes run round its plinth, its four stone wheels are carved with lotus petals, pilasters frame its shrine, and its brick tower is long gone. The boulders glow gold at sunset, and Hampi is one of the world's great bouldering areas.
The sky wears Gond scales, from Madhya Pradesh.
The motion
The sun's rays breathe; the coconut palms sway. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Hampi takes Tangerine #F15A22, one of the three Sunny Days colours — with its icon in white on it.
