The story

Sunday, 7 pm: Mysore Palace switches on, every dome, arch and tower traced in bulbs; families stroll the forecourt among flower beds and lit lamps, and a traveller on the path points up at the lights while flying foxes cross the night.

Why this picture

Mysore Palace, the Indo-Saracenic seat of the Wodeyars, is lit with nearly 100,000 bulbs on Sundays and public holidays from 7 pm, and every night of Dasara, when crowds gather on its wide forecourt of lawns and paths to watch; Indian flying foxes leave their roosts across the city at dusk.

The motion

The bulbs glow in turn; the stars twinkle; the moon's rings turn; flying foxes cross the sky; families stroll; the trees sway. A 16-second loop.

Another moment in Mysore

A second scene: another true moment at Mysore, drawn in the graphic vocabulary with the animals and city symbols that belong there. Wide for screens, tall for a phone held upright.

The second Mysore scene: Dusk by the palace's fort wall

The story

Dusk by the palace's fort wall: a tonga waits for a fare on the road, its horse in harness, and a traveller walks up holding a square of Mysore pak, while the sun sets behind Chamundi hill, flying foxes cross the pink sky and the lamps along the road are lit.

Why this moment

Horse-drawn tongas still carry visitors round Mysore Palace and the old city. Mysore pak was first made in the palace kitchens and is still sold by its inventor's family near Devaraja market. Indian flying foxes roost in the city's big trees and fly out at sunset, and Chamundi hill rises over the city.

The sky wears Kasuti, from Karnataka.

The motion

Flying foxes cross the sky; the setting sun's fan of rays breathes; the trees along the wall sway. A 16-second loop.

Mysore in symbols

Beside its icon, the things that are Mysore, drawn in the Brand Manual's city language: a monument in the city grey with its openings cut, the things of the place in flat landscape colours. Each comes in colour and in the city grey. Every place's symbols

  • Mysore pakOf the place

Mysore pak, created in the Mysore Palace kitchens under Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV: gram flour, sugar and a lot of ghee, set golden and porous and cut into blocks.

  • A Mysore silk sariOf the place

Mysore silk (GI): pure mulberry-silk saris in one rich colour with a broad border of real zari, its thread 65% silver and 0.65% gold, woven in Mysore since the Wadiyars.

  • A tongaOf the place

The tonga, Mysore's horse-drawn carriage: two wheels, a canopy, one seat facing forward and one back, waiting at the palace gates.

  • Mysore Palace, litMonument

Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas, built 1897–1912): three storeys of granite, about 75 m long, its main front a large central arch flanked by four smaller arches on each side on granite pillars; a five-storey central tower under a gold-plated onion dome with a small chhatri on top; five-storey square towers at both ends under pink marble domes. It is lit with nearly 100,000 bulbs on Sundays, public holidays and the nights of Dasara: here strings of bulbs run along its cornices, its towers' edges and its arches. Plain architecture: the sculpture over the central arch and the temples in the grounds are left out.

  • Brindavan Gardens and their fountainsOf the place

Brindavan Gardens (laid out 1927–1932), 60 acres below the Krishna Raja Sagara dam on the Kaveri, 12 km from Mysore: laid out in three terraces of lawns, flower beds and fountains, and known for the musical fountain whose jets keep time with songs in the evening. Seen from the gardens' foot, the dam's long masonry wall across the top.
