A shikara on Dal Lake at dawn. Kahwa in hand.
The story
Dawn on Dal Lake: a carved shikara glides past the houseboats under the Zabarwan hills, a traveller leaning back under its canopy with a small cup of kahwa while the boatman, sitting on the stern, works the heart-shaped paddle; lotus open in the shallows and a pied kingfisher hovers over the open water.
Why this picture
The shikara, a long, slim wooden boat (25 to 41 ft) with a canopy and a cushioned seat, painted and carved in bright colours, is how Srinagar crosses Dal Lake; its boatman sits at the stern with a heart-shaped paddle. Carved cedar houseboats line the shore below the Zabarwan range, pink lotus bloom in July and August, and kahwa, green tea with saffron, cardamom and almonds, is served in small cups. Pied kingfishers hover over the open water and dive for fish.

The sky wears Khatamband, from Kashmir.
The motion
The paddle dips and draws; steam curls from the cup; the water lines run, row against row; a pair of black kites circles high over the lake; a pied kingfisher hovers and dives; the sun's rays breathe; the willows sway. A 16-second loop.
Colour
Srinagar takes Ocean #0072BC, one of the three Waters colours — with its icon in white on it.
